How to Pump Gas in Shift At Midnight
Two independent full-release PC videos show the same fuel workflow: after the pump unlocks, read its note, ask the driver how much fuel they want, inspect the vehicle and check its plate in the registry, take the nozzle, hold the left mouse button to fill the requested amount, press G to return it, then finish the interaction so the driver leaves.
When the pump becomes available
The gas pump unlocks during Shift 4 in the two current full-release runs and the Tpose walkthrough. When the notice board says the pump is repaired, go outside and read the instruction note beside the pump before the first driver arrives. In the BawkbaVods run, the unlock appears at 3833s and the note and registry workflow at 3891s.
PC step-by-step workflow
- Ask the driver how you can help, then ask how much fuel they want. BawkbaVods shows the amount question at
3972s. - Use the flashlight to inspect the car and its visible contents.
- Read the license plate and check it on the vehicle registry device. Ordinary or unrelated crime is not the doppelganger test: ignore ordinary crime such as visible contraband unless the current task says otherwise; compare the driver’s story, car, and registry evidence.
- Take the fuel nozzle from the pump and move it to the vehicle.
- Hold the left mouse button (LMB) to pump the amount the driver requested. The prompt is visible at
4008sin the BawkbaVods run. - Press
Gto return the nozzle to the pump. - Finish the transaction and allow a cleared driver to leave. Captain Atlas independently shows the tutorial at
105s, registry at111–129s, and completed fuel service at310–316s.
Evidence boundary by input device
| Input | Publicly supported instruction |
|---|---|
| Keyboard and mouse | Hold LMB to fuel; press G to return the nozzle in the observed PC build |
| Xbox controller | The controller mapping is not publicly confirmed by the sources used here |
| Steam Deck | The device-specific pump mapping is unknown; follow the current Steam Input prompt |
The steps describe two recorded PC runs, not a promise that a future patch will keep every bind. Check the current on-screen prompt if it differs.
If the pump will not work
- Re-read the pump note and confirm the pump has actually unlocked.
- Ask for the amount before taking the nozzle; the workflow shown in both runs establishes the requested target first.
- Check that the nozzle was returned with
Gafter fueling. Leaving it active can prevent the task from resolving. - Two Steam threads report pump interaction failures. They do not establish a universal fix, so record the build, input device, vehicle, displayed prompt, and exact step that stopped responding before restarting.
For the surrounding route, use the Shift 4 field guide. For uncited bindings, consult the controls evidence page instead of guessing.
