How to Identify Doppelgangers
Use every evidence channel before deciding: scan a compatible ID or search the NET Database manually, compare alive or deceased status, occupation, appearance, and birth date, use up to five available questions to test those fields, then observe behavior and any vehicle evidence. Official storefronts confirm this workflow; full-release videos show examples, while named customer outcomes remain run-dependent.
Fast inspection order
- You may ask up to five available questions. Use the questions that test record fields, then compare the answers rather than treating an odd tone as proof.
- Scan the ID or driver license when it has a readable barcode. If a passport or license cannot be scanned, use manual lookup in the NET Database.
- Compare database status: an alive person presenting as deceased, or the reverse, is a direct contradiction. A full-release run demonstrates a deceased-status mismatch at
841s. - Compare occupation or job, appearance, name, and birth date. The recorded run demonstrates an occupation check at
1057s; Tpose also documents date-of-birth and scar-side discrepancies. - Observe behavior. Floating or physically impossible movement is evidence; nervousness alone is not a universal rule.
- For drivers, inspect the vehicle, read the license plate, and compare it with the registry and the driver’s story.
The official stores support the multi-channel method. The video timestamps are observed examples, not a fixed customer answer key.
ID and database protocol
| Check | What to compare | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Barcode scan | Scannable ID against the NET record | BawkbaVods shows a scan at 425s; not every document type scans |
| Manual database search | Name or document details for a non-scannable ID | Use it when the game presents the manual route |
| Life status | Alive versus deceased | A contradiction is stronger than memory of a customer from another run |
| Occupation | Stated work against the record | Ask the matching question before deciding |
| Appearance | Portrait, visible features, and scar side | Record the exact mismatch; do not use vague “uncanny” impressions |
| Birth date | Spoken answer against ID and database | Compare the full date or year shown in the current run |
Behavior, vehicles, and the Emotoscope
Behavior is one official evidence channel, but it must be specific. Captain Atlas records visibly floating behavior during 916–951s; that is stronger than a subjective posture judgment. Vehicle customers add plate registry, car contents, and the driver’s account to the same evidence stack.
The Emotoscope appears much later in the recorded story run at 7254s. Treat it as an additional tool when your current run has unlocked it, not as a requirement for early shifts or a replacement for documents and questions.
Consequences of the verdict
- If you let a doppelganger leave, official store text says it can return later as a monster. Captain Atlas’s recorded case continues to an attack at
1109s. - If you shoot or kill an innocent human, the full-release run shows an earnings penalty at
1427s. The exact amount can vary with the transaction, so this guide does not invent a fixed number. - Do not rely on a face being human in a previous run. Steam describes randomized shifts, and Tpose labels its Shift 4 customer table as one playthrough rather than a checklist.
Start with the beginner operating loop and use the pump guide for the separate driver-fueling interaction.
